Rules
The Laboratory for Usage-centered Software Engineering (Lab:USE) is sponsoring a competition to design a logo for the new Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute. The Institute is a technical and scientific organization based in Madeira and connected with both the University of Madeira and Madeira Tecnopolo. It will be engaged in research, development, and education in areas related to interactive technologies, both the human and technical aspects.
Design Objectives. Lab:USE is seeking a distinctive and memorable graphical logo that will help establish and communicate a strong identity representing the mission and orientation of the Institute.
The logo should be effective in both color and black-and-white, usable in a variety of media and contexts, with or without the accompanying text "Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute."

Eligibility.
The competition is open to any member of the University of Madeira community: faculty, staff, or students. Any eligible person may make up to 2 entries; each entry must be submitted separately.

Form.
Entries may be drawn by any tool or means but must be submitted as graphic image files in a standard format (tiff, jpeg, png, or gif) at least 1024 pixels on the shortest dimension. Files must not be larger than 1 megabyte.
Each entry must include at least one color version plus one black-and- white version. Up to 2 additional color versions in alternative color schemes may also be included in an entry.

Submission.
Entries must be submitted by email to njn@uma.pt by the deadline indicated. The subject line of the email must read "LOGO COMPETITION" and the body of the email must include the full name and contact details of the artist. The graphic files should be provided as attachments to the email. The image files must not include any identifying information, such as the name or initials of the artist.

Selection.
Finalists will be selected by a screening committee. All finalists will be required to sign a legal waiver of all rights in their design. The winning design will be chosen from among finalists by polling the current members of Lab:USE. All decisions of the sponsors are final, and the sponsors reserve the right to modify or alter any winning design or to reject all entries.

DEADLINE:
Entries must be emailed before midnight, GMT, 19 June 2009, to njn@uma.pt.
