Wind power forecasting is a recent and important development that allows a sustainable increase in the penetration of wind power in electric networks and systems. INESC Porto has been involved at national and international level in this effort. The talk will discuss, in a light way, the state of the art in wind power forecasting. Examples related to the EPREV project in Portugal and the project with the Argonne National Laboratory for the USA will be mentioned. The last part of the talk will describe some new advancement in this topic, namely the use of neural networks in the forecasting exercise and the concepts of Entropy replacing the classical concept of Minimum Square Error for system training. The impacts of the quality of predictions for 3-day ahead forecasting, in the energy markets and in system operation (namely unit commitment and security) will be discussed.
