Caros alunos do MEI,

===================================================
PROPOSTA: A031 - HCI, Biosensing, Biofeedback, health informatics
ORIENTADOR: Prof. Ian Oakley
RESUMO:
Motivation
Bio-feedback systems are capable of sensing bodily activity (e.g. muscle use, motion) and conveying this interactively to a user. In the context of clinical and therapeutic use, they have a strong potential to improve levels of care and recovery rates. This is achieved through the use of interactive feedback to provide engagement and additional motivation for users as they perform physiotherapy routines. Furthermore, the detailed information they record provides valuable additional insights for clinicians while making diagnoses and monitoring progress. This project will use a bio-feedback system developed in Portugal by Plux (www.plux.info). The over-arching goal will be extend and improve their current user interface to the their therapeutic bio-feedback product.
Main goals
This project will refine and improve an existing system. The structure of the work and main goals will be as follows
1. A literature review, competitive analysis and detailed study of the Plux bio-feedback system in order to identify areas and strategies for improvement. A report detailing these should be produced. This activity will may involve (subject to feasibility) fieldwork observing the use of the Plux bio-feedback system with real users.
2. Selection and development of novel user interfaces based on the report contents and via consultation with Plux. Potential candidate approachs involve expending the range of exercises and conditions used in the Plux system, extending the feedback paradigm to increase user motivation to perform the exercises (e.g. through integrating gaming elements), or developing customized feedback for different user groups (e.g. children or older users).
3. Evaluation of the merit of the implemented enhancements. The nature of this evaluation will depend on the end result of the project. The goal is to empirically demonstrate the value of the work conducted during the thesis.
The thesis should culminate in the production of a paper suitable for publication in an international conference.
